Jan 12, 2012: New Quarterly Releases of the NYS Streets and Address Points Data Sets are Now Available!

NYS GIS Data Sharing Cooperative members can access the data through the NYS GIS Clearinghouse on the OCS Data Set Inventory pages at http://gis.ny.gov/gisdata/inventories/member.cfm?organizationID=522.

We are having a little delay in the generation of User Dictionaries.  When these files have been posted we will send another notice.

 Please contact me at rcoryell@dhses.ny.gov or 518-242-5048 with any technical questions regarding the data.   We welcome county or local government partners for maintaining the data; please contact Cheryl Benjamin (cbenjamin@dhses.ny.gov or 518-242-5034) to meet with you to explain the mutual benefits from becoming a data maintenance partner.

Jan 11, 2012: The NYCArc User Group will hold its 3rd annual Symposium in June 2012 in New York City!

The NYCArc User Group was created for the GIS Professionals of New York City and surrounding areas.  The NYCArc User Group is an organization led by GIS Professionals for GIS Professionals.

The conference will feature a variety of GIS presentations.  The symposium is expected to attract approximately 300 GIS attendees.  The 3rd Annual Symposium will be formatted differently in 2012 with a Call for Presentations from users of the GIS Community.

Presentations will be expected to be 30 minutes in length.  If interested in submitting a presentation proposal for the symposium please submit an abstract following the criteria below:

  • Presentations should be related to a specific project utilizing Esri products
  • Abstracts cannot market specific product or services
  • Abstracts should be less than 250 words
  • The submitted abstract, if accepted, will be posted on the NYCArc User Group website and will be printed for the symposium agenda
  • Abstracts must be submitted by January 13, 2012 
  • Abstracts will be reviewed and selected by the NYCArc User Group Committee

 Note: If the abstract is not chosen for the symposium, the abstract submission will be considered for future presentation at a monthly NYCArc User Group meeting if agreed by the submitter.

Nov 23, 2011: Election Results

The NYS GIS Association has elected new board members and the new board has elected officers for the coming year.  The three elected board members are: 

Verne LaClair (re-elected), Amy Work, and Dale Morris.

 The newly elected officers are:

President, Bruce Oswald, 

Vice-President, Verne LaClair, 

Treasurer, Christa Hay

Secretary, Julie Tolar

There will be no president-elect this year.  At the next annual meeting in 2012 the membership will elect a president and a president-elect.

Nov 2, 2011: New York State has signed an agreement with Esri to provide GIS licenses for the K-12 environment.

The New York State GIS Association is in the final stages of addressing the administrative details of this agreement which will run through July 31, 2014.

 

 

This was a venture spearheaded by the NYS GIS Association as part of its educational outreach efforts. Representatives from the NYS GIS Association, including Alexander Chaucer (Skidmore College), Amy Work (IAGT), Ann Deakin (SUNY Fredonia), and Bruce Oswald (Oswald Associates) have been working with Charlie Fitzpatrick and Chris French of Esri and Darren Faccilonga and Stan Silverman of NYIT (New York Institute of Technology) to establish this educational license agreement.

Election Procedures:
In order to allow members to easily participate in the 2011 Board of Directors election, the NYS GIS Association is using an on-line voting service called "ElectionBuddy."  Each Association member eligible to participate in this year's election* will be e-mailed a unique key with a link to the site.  The e-mail will be sent from "electionbuddy Elections."  Please keep an eye out for this e-mail as it contains your unique key (ballot).  After receiving the e-mail, follow the link to the NYSGISA polling site to vote.  Candidate statements are also available on the polling site.  All voting is confidential.  There will be no paper ballots available.

There are three (3) openings on the Board of Directors.  Voters may select up to 3 candidates.

The 2011 election will be open for two weeks, closing at noon on November 15th.

Oct 24, 2011: The NYS GIS Association is Undertaking a Membership Drive!
The Association would like to encourage all persons in the New York state geospatial community to sign up for membership now! 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sign up now and become eligible for our membership appreciation contest.  On November 15th at our Annual Meeting to be held at 5:00 p.m. at NEARC in Saratoga Springs, we will be giving away a new iPad 2 to an Association member residing in New York State. 

The drawing rules are simple:

    1. All members (including those that sign up at the Annual Meeting) who reside in New York State will be given one ticket that will be placed into the drawing.
    2. All members who reside in New York State who attend the Annual Meeting will be given one additional ticket that will be placed into the drawing.
    3. All members who reside in New York State who bring in a new member will be given an additional ticket that will be placed into the drawing for each new member that they get to join the Association.  (The new member must identify the current member (only one) that encouraged them to join via e-mail to " target=_blank>Sheri Norton subsequent to their joining.)
    4. No current Board Members or Committee Chairs are eligible for the drawing.

Become a member and become eligible today!  If you are already a member, encourage someone to join and double your chances to win!  All attendees at the meeting can obtain an additional ticket as well.

The NYS GIS Association is inviting all members and interested individuals to our annual meeting on Tuesday, November 15th, from 5:00-6:30pm, at the Annual NEARC Conference in Saratoga Springs, (http://www.northeastarc.org/2011/html/schedule.shtml).  

The meeting will include:
     
   - A presentation of Association activities
   - Survey from membership on training opportunities for 2012
   - Discussion about GIS in K-12 for New York State
   - Annual Awards. Recognize your peers for a job well done!
   - Election Results
   - Door Prize - iPad 2.  All NY Resident members eligible, double your chances by attending the meeting.

Candidates are requested to fill three (3) vacancies on the New York State GIS Association (NYSGISA) Board of Directors. To qualify as a candidate, a person must be a member in good standing of the NYSGISA as of October 16th, 2011.
